Outfit

Hello everyone, how was your weekend? I had a fun and enjoyable day on Saturday because I went wedding dress shopping. I tried on a few different dresses just to get some ideas and it was so incredibly exciting. The feeling of trying on a wedding dress and being a princess for a short time is amazing and so different from anything I had experience before, it was very special. I have been very clear on the style of wedding dress that I want for a long time now. I adore the princess style with a strapless, fitted, beaded and sparkly bodice and a full and puffy tulle skirt without a train. I tried on two in this style and I fell in love with them, they were beautiful. I also loved a dress that was mainly black with white polka dots and black, white and silver sparkles on the bodice. It was so different from what I was looking for but I loved it because it was so unique, a statement and a change from what everyone else has. I probably will choose something more traditional though because I tried on a princess style afterwards and realised that I didn't want to miss out on my dream look when it will be my only chance ever to have a white princess dress like that.

I bought this dress a few weeks ago in a Princess Highway sale and wore it for the first time on Friday. It was lovely weather on Friday but then rained again for the whole weekend and I am starting to notice that it is becoming considerably colder. I don't think there will be many more days of wearing sleeveless summer dresses. The black rossette is not part of the dress, I just added it from another top.

Item of the Week 003

DIY Skirt

For the past three months I have been taking a sewing course. I have wanted to learn how to sew for the past couple of years so I thought the summer holidays would be a perfect opportunity to start and I have been able to fit it into my schedule to continue as I returned to university. I started off learning the basics of sewing and making some polka dot pillow cases and then I progressed onto a skirt which I finished last week. I have made two very basic skirts in the past which I posted
here and here but the skirt I made in sewing class is much better. I made patterns for both a gathered skirt and a straight skirt and this skirt is more complex and better quality. I properly learned how to sew zips, buttons and waistbands. I am very pleased with how my skirt turned out and I can't wait to make some more, it is just a matter of finding time. I love the print and there are so many different tops I can wear with it as well as my flower shoes. I will make an outfit post of it soon. Eventually I will learn how to make a dress.

I love wearing an item that I made myself. I also made a flower belt last weekend, with some help, which I will post at some point in time since it goes well with this skirt.

Outfit

As I mentioned last week, it was my birthday on Wednesday. I had an enjoyable day but it went extremely fast and I can't believe it is over already. I enjoyed spending some time celebrating with all the people who are important in my life and on Wednesday I also got my hair cut to maintain the style. I received some lovely gifts which I will post on my blog at some point. The Review top I am wearing was a birthday gift from my mother in law. She has flawless taste when it comes to choosing my clothes and it is probably my favourite top at the moment. I love the way it looks with the new shoes I bought last Tuesday.

I had a reasonably quiet weekend, mainly because it has been raining for the last few days so I spent a lot of time watching parody videos of Friday by Rebecca Black. Don't get me started on this song but it leaves me thinking- what has the world come to? 'Got to have my bowl, got to have cereal, the way her choice on whether to sit in the front seat or the black seat as a life changing decision, thirteen year olds driving to school in convertible cars and partying, 'yesterday was Thursday, today is Friday, tomorrow is Saturday, Sunday comes afterwards,'- insane and absolutely unbelievable!

Item of the Week 002

I have finally found time to create my second item of the week post: my black and white quilted ballet flats.

I bought these Chanel inspired ballet flats just two days ago in Sydney City. I had wanted a pair of shoes in this style for a very long time, probably even a few years but I had been unsucessful in finding them. It seemed as though they were not the style of shoes that were seen everyday in the regular shoes stores. I had given up hope of ever finding a pair of black and white quilted ballet flats. A few weeks ago I surprisingly came across a pair in the shops and on an online store but they were far too expensive and more than double the amount I would usually pay for shoes. After posting this on facebook one of my university friends informed me of a store where she had seen this style of shoes. I had never even heard of this store before but I like it now and it sells many different brands of shoes. This store had this style in three different brands so there was a range from which I could choose. They were all afforable prices and in the end I chose the Mollini brand. I was so incredibly excited when I came across these shoes and I am so thankful to my friend for locating the shoes for me that I loved so much.

Childhood + Outfit

Today I searched through some old photos on my computer, made a facebook album of my childhood and decided to make a blog post with the photos too. I always enjoy looking at photos from the past and it is always one of my favourite things to do. They bring back so many memories and remind me of how many things have changed, yet there are always some things that remain the same. I miss my childhood so incredibly and it was such a happy time for me. I wish I could go back to that time even just for a few days.

On another note, I have a few pictures of the outfit I wore to university on Monday. I would have liked more pictures so I could make a proper outfit post but I am without a camera for a short period of time and the other pictures didn't turn out well. It is not very often that I wear two printed items together because it can be difficult to get right but this is an exception. I love this combination of the flower printed top and the bow printed skirt. I should also have worn my bow belt with this outfit but I only thought about that at night. Last weekend I sucessfully cut my own fringe because it was too long but I didn't want to go through the process of having my hair cut which is expensive and time consuming. I had never cut it myself before but I am pleased with the way it turned out.

I am certainly looking forward to the weekend because I am going away for two days to visit some potential wedding venues.

Alannah Hill Collection

If you have been reading my blog for long enough you will know that my favourite brand is Alannah Hill. I wish I could afford to purchase more items from this label and that I could dress like the girls in these collections everyday. I was browsing the Alannah Hill website on the weekend and I was very pleased to see that a new collection has been added. I chose my favourites to display in this post.

Academy Awards 2011

I have finally found some time to complete my post on the Academy Awards. I was very excited about the Academy Awards this year, much more than I ever had been about a red carpet event in the past. I wanted to attended the live screening of the event at the cinema but that was at 11.00am on a Monday in our time so I couldn't because I was at university. I caught up on everything when I arrived home and watched the presentations and red carpet reviews. Overall there were many red carpet looks that I loved from this year's event and there were very few gowns that I could fault. My favourite looks were Mila Kunis, Hailee Steinfeld, Mandy Moore and Halle Berry. Here is my review:

Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis

I am so extremely impressed by this dress and I think it is stunning and perfect in every possible way. The colour is beautiful and a welcome change from the more common red and nude tones of the event. I love the decorative nature of the chiffon and lace, the panelling and the low cut design. Her hair, makeup and jewellery was just right. I cannot fault this dress and it is one of the best I have ever seen. I am totally in love with this dress. I, like many people, have been very impressed with Mila Kunis' looks this red carpet season.

Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman

This is another look that I thought was very beautiful and I especially love this particular shade of purple. I love the detailing of the dress, the cut and the way it sits off the shoulders. I adore the tassel earings and, although many people were disappointed by the extent to which this look matched, I did not have any issues with this and I always love a look so coordinated in this way. I have been impressed by Natalie Portman;s looks this red carpet season. I was also pleased to see her win the Oscar and give such an appropriate speech.

Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore

Word cannot describe how much I love this look and it is absolutely perfect in every way. I cannot fault this because it is put together so well and Many Moore looks so elegant and classy here. I love the nude tone, the sparkles, the little sleeves and the overall shape of the dress. I thought her makeip and hair were just right and complimented the look. It reminds me of a glamorous princess and this so consistent with my style. This is definitely one of the best dresses I have ever seen and it would take something very special to beat this look.

Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway

I love Anne Hathaway's look here and I think that red is the most perfect colour on her because she is a such a classic beauty and looks so elegant. This dress made her stand out for all the right reasons. I love the detailing on the dress and the bold shape and her makeup and hair complimented the dress. It was interesting to see Anne host the Academy Awards this year. I may be the only person who believes this but I think that the amount of outfit changes she had throughout the night was excessive. While I liked most of the outfits it just seemed unnecessary. Plus, eight different outfits meant that we didn't get to see each outfit for very long and I think it would have been better to showcase less gowns but for a longer time period each. My favourites were the gorgeous blue dress, the white gown and the fringe dress.

Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon

I simply love Reese. I think she is such a lovely person with a great personality and I like to see all of her movies. I'm not entirely sure what to think about this look. There is nothing paticularly wrong about it but I think it is a little plain. Black and white is a safe and reliable choice but at the same time there was nothing that jumped out at me here and I would have liked to have seen something more impressive from her. I did, however, love her hair and the style was amazing.

Amy Adams
Amy Adams

Overall I liked this dress but there are certainly some changes that should have been made which would have yielded vast improvements. I love the colour and sparkly nature of this dress and there is something about the combination of this blue in sparkly material that I have adored for a long time now. I like the shape of the dress as it appears flattering on her. The issue I have with this look is the jewellery. I dislike the green jewellery with the blue dress and, like many others, I think the necklace was completely wrong How can she not have realised that a pair of statement earings would have been a much better option?

Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson

It seems like I am the only person who didn't love Jennifer Hudson's look but this time I feel the need to divert from the majority opinion. While I believe there was an element of confidence and beauty to her look and I loved her hair, makeup and jewellery, I did not like the dress. I have disliked every shade of orange for a very long time now. Also, I disliked the cut of the dress and think she revealed far too much cleavage. Sorry everyone!

Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson

I have heard some negative opinions about Scarlett's look but I actually liked her dress. I love the different shades of purple, the lace floral design and the high neckline with the cut out back. I thought it was a very sweet and pretty dress. However, her hair totally ruined the look and I cannot comprehend how she would attend the Academy Awards with it in that state. It is far too messy and unstyled and it actually remind me of my hair when I have not yet had a chance to straighten it. A different hairstyle would have improved this look tremundously.

Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock

I love Sandra Bullock's look here and I adore the colour red on her especially against her dark hair. I think this is a beautiful dress and really stands out and makes a statement. The red makes this dress very classic and elegant. I love the strapless style, the bodice and the way the dress flows. This is one of my favourite dresses I have ever seen her in and I loved it almost as much as the gown she wore to last year's event. This is a stunning and well put together look.

Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwenyth Paltrow

I must admit that I wasn't so sure about this look when I first saw it but having reviewed it afterwards I can't believe how I ever thought that and I totally love it. I adore everything silver, gold or sparkly at the moment and with her beautiful long blonde hair she is so stunning. I love the style of the dress with the deep neckline and it reminds me of something that Miranda from Sex and the City would wear. This is definitely one of my favourite dresses of the Academy Awards.

Michelle Williams
Michelle Williams

I did not like this look at all and it was one of my least favourites of the entire event. In my opinion it was far too simple, plain and boring and I was very underwhelmed. It was mainly the style of the dress that I disliked. I didn't like the combination of a long dress with such a conservative round neck and those sleeves. The neckline reminded me too much of a t-shirt. The colour was average but didn't make much of a statement. It would have been good to see something a little more glamorous from her.

Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett

Overall I am not a fan of this look but I didn't totally hate it either. I think that with a few adjustments I would have liked it just not in its current form. I liked the skirt part from the waist , the back and even some of the beading but I disliked the cutout in the middle and the three dimensional effect. It reminded me of a photoframe and this was too unusual for my liking. I also did not like the rigid and structured sleeves, they didn't seem right and I wasn't a fan of such a high neckline for this dress either.

Florence Welch
Florence Welch

I would also place Florence Welch in the worst dressed category of the event. While I love vintage style and lace, this is taking it too far because there is just too much lace and too many frills. Again, I disliked the high neckline and long sleeves especially with a long dress, I believe it covers too much. For long dresses , I personally prefer shorter sleeves, a lower neckline or a low back. Also, the colour was completely wrong against her hair colour skin tone and washed her out too much.

Hailee Steinfeld
Hailee Steinfeld WOW

Words cannot desrcibe how much I love this look and it was my favourite of the Academy Awards. It is also one of the most stunning dresses I have ever seen in my whole life. From my past reviews you have probably noticed that I love Hailee Steinfeld's fashion and I thought her looks for the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards were flawless too. I also think she is a very lovely and sweet girl. This dress is beautiful. I love the colour, the sparkles and detailing, the transperant part at the top, the way the dress flairs out just the right amount and the adorable length. I am probably going to be thinking about this dress for a very long time now because I believe it is perfect. I know many people have written about it being age approriate for her but I believe this look goes beyond that. I am seven years older than her and it would be my perfect dress too.

Halle Berry
Halee Berry

I am not usually a fan of Halle Berry's red carpet looks but this was certainly an exception. I was extremely impressed by her look her and I think the nude tone was fantastic on her. I adore the nude dress trend at the moment so much. I love the decorative bodice, the tulle and the sparkles and the detailing at the top. It fits her so well and I love the material and the way the dress flows to the side when it reaches the bottom. This is another perfect dress which I could not fault. It is an outstanding dress.

Helena Bonham Carter
Helena Bonham Carter

I am not a fan of Helena Bonham Carter's style and this look was no exception. I just think her personal style is too crazy and far out for my liking and not in accordance with my taste at all. There was nothing terribly wrong with this dress, as there was with her look at the Golden Globe awards of this year, but at the same time there was nothing I particularly liked or that stood out to me either.

Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman

Again, this was another look that wasn't completely terrible but that I ddin't particularly like either. I loved her hair and I believe it is such a beautiful colour at the moment. However, as many people would agree, constantly seeing her in white and black is boring and it would be great to see her in some colour and a different style of dress (which is why I liked her Grammy Awards dress so much). I dislike the necklace and I think a statement pair of earings would have looked much better. As for the dress, I don't like the pattern or the parts that come out of the sides.

Celine Dion
Celine Dion

I am a huge fan of Celine Dion and she has been my favourite singer of all time for as long as I can remember. I was so pleased to see her at this year's event. I loved this dress on her, primarily because of how well it fitted her and how it showed off her figure. I think she has an incredibly body and the neckline is just right. Her necklace was very beautiful and went well with the dress. I think the colour with the shimmer is lovely on her too.

Helen Mirren
Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren looks fabulous here. I liked the colour of her dress, the fit, the shape, the bodice, the puffed sleeves and everything really. I liked the necklace and, although I was surprised that it wasn't shorter, this is only a minor detail. Overall, I believe it was an elegant and glamourous look and a perfect choice for her. I was very impressed.

Penelope Cruz
Penelope Cruz

Overall I loved this dress. I adored the beautiful red colour, the pattern and design, the sparkles and the thin straps. Her hair is so gorgeous and she is just so incredibly gorgeous. I, like many others, am amazed by how good she looks just a short time after having her first child. However, I did think that the top part of the dress was far too revealing. With a few minor changes here this dress would have been taken to the next level, in my opinion.

So what did you think? What were your favourite and least favourite looks of the Academy Awards 2011?
